Maltodextrin is a post exercise supplement for working dogs.
It is a flavorless, easily digestible carbohydrate made from natural corn
starch. The starch is cooked, and then acid and/or enzymes are used to break the
starch into smaller polymers (a process similar to that used by the body to
digest carbohydrate). Maltodextrin is a convenient source of energy and
facilitates the fast delivery and uptake by muscle tissue of vital nutrients
that aid in muscle glycogen replacement after exercise. There are no vitamins
or flavors added. Maltodextrin comes as a powder form.
This product is highly recommended not only for racing sled
dogs, but for gun dogs, herding dogs and racing Greyhounds alike.
Maltodextrin is pure carbohydrate and contains no additives.
Maltodextrin does not contain significant quantities of protein, fat or fiber.

Feeding Directions
Dissolve 1/2 cup of Maltodextrin powder in baited* water per
dog (up to 30 minutes after exercise). Use only as much baiting (if possible,
low in fat) as necessary to ensure palatability. Mix well.
Sprint Dogs, Hunting Dogs, Herding Dogs - Maltodextrin
should be fed as soon after exercising as possible. It is important to rest
dogs after giving Maltodextrin, so that it is not burned as fuel, but instead
replaces muscle glycogen.
Distance Dogs, Field Trail Dogs - Maltodextrin can be given
in the form of flavored* ice cube snacks during a run or a field trail
competition. Can also be added to meatball snacks. It serves as a quick source
of energy and is burned during exercise.
* Because Maltodextrin is pretty much flavorless product
(has slight sweetness to it), the water, in which Maltodextrin is mixed in, has
to be flavored to ensure palatability. The water has to be baited (flavored)
with something the dog likes - ground beef, canned food, kibble, fish meal, and
so on. The same goes for ice cubes and meatballs. Flavor needs to be added to
ensure palatability.

depending on consistency of the product and absorbed moisture.
